Real Madrid secure an 82-70 win over Bilbao Basket after a slow first half, pulling away in the final quarter at the Movistar Arena
Despite entering the encounter as favourites, Real Madrid faced a confident Bilbao, as through their ability to generate mid-range looks, they disrupted Madrid’s rhythm, entering the first half with a 43-39 lead. Melwin Pantzar stood out as they took the challenge head-on.
Real Madrid struggled from beyond the arc, unlike their usual dominance; they relied on their presence in the paint and foul generation to stay within reach. Mario Hezonja provided early scoring, while 6th man Theo Maledon’s impact off the bench proved significant. The Frenchman ended the night flawless from the line, not missing a single free-throw.
The turning point came late in the third quarter. Veteran Sergio Llull’s driving finish brought Madrid level at 61–61, shifting momentum ahead of the final period. From there, the hosts imposed their physicality.
Usman Garuba and Edy Tavares dominated the paint in the fourth quarter, combining for crucial baskets and defensive stops as Madrid went on a decisive run. Full-court pressure further unsettled Bilbao, whose offensive efficiency dropped significantly in the closing minutes.
Bilbao’s offence was disrupted in the late stages of the game, as Real Madrid tightened their guard, while their FG% dropped significantly.
Madrid’s defensive control ultimately defined the win, as the home side closed the game with authority, keeping their unbeaten record alive at the Movistar.
The result lifts Real Madrid back into the upper tier of the standings, reinforcing their status as contenders, while Bilbao leaves with credit for a competitive performance that ultimately fell short under late pressure.
