For our final project, I travelled to Gibraltar alongside four coursemates to bring to life an idea I had developed around one of football’s most unique clubs — F.C. Magpies, formerly known as Bruno’s Magpies.

The story begins in Bruno’s Bar & Restaurant, where the club was founded with just £500 by an 18-year-old who wanted to play in the league with his friends. Years later, that same club reached the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers after winning the domestic cup, facing sides such as Derry City F.C., which they defeated, and F.C. Copenhagen.

Recognising the impressive and unique journey, we five students, with a simple documentary setup, set out to create an ambitious documentary capturing the club’s rise. I led the interview process, speaking with fans, several players, the coaching staff, and even the kit man to form a picture of what playing for FC Magpies really meant.

What began as a simple concept within a discussion of five friends was developed into a fully realised production. From conducting interviews to taking on much of the editing process, the experience brought together my creativity, journalism and content creation skills. To me, it was an incredible experience and a testament to what you can achieve when you put your mind to a project.
